The most important part of preventive medicine is the annual comprehensive physical examination. Your dog cannot tell you when he or she gets sick. The most common problem in dogs includes ears, teeth and gums, intestinal parasites, and weight control. You live with your dog and know what is normal for your pet. Never hesitate to report any abnormalities or any concerns to your veterinarian. We recommend that you check your dog’s ears frequently to avoid infections. They should be clean and free of discharge and odor. Most of the ear problems are painful and can cause hearing loss. Teeth should be free of tartar and plaque. Gums should look pink and healthy. Bad breath can signal health problem. Active dogs are not usually overweight, but if you notice your dog start to gain extra weight you should ask your veterinarian for nutritional advice to maintain your dog’s healthy adult weight.
